FAQ

FAQ's

Q: Why is torque calibration essential?

A: Torque calibration is essential because almost any fastener has a specification for torque. The purpose is to maintain a clamping force where the fastener stays together and is as immune as possible to fatigue.  Read our article discussing the five essential must-know facts about torque calibration at https://mhforce.com/facts-about-torque-calibration/ .  We cover why torque calibration is necessary, the definition of torque, mass versus force, sensitivity to environmental conditions, and handling and storage issues.

For more insights into force and torque calibration, metrology, and load cell reliability, explore our comprehensive blog at https://mhforce.com/blog/.

We believe in changing how people think about force and torque calibration in everything we do. This includes setting expectations on load cell reliability and challenging the "just calibrate it" mentality by educating our customers on what matters and what causes significant errors.

We focus on reducing these errors and making our products simple and user-friendly. This means your instruments will pass calibration more often and produce more precise measurements, giving you the confidence to focus on your business.

Companies around the globe rely on Morehouse for accuracy and speed. Our torque measurement uncertainties are at least 10-50 times lower than the competition as we have the 2nd most accurate standard in the world, developed by a National Metrology Institute (NPL, UK), and is known to be better than 0.003 % of applied torque. We turn around your equipment in 7-10 business days so you can return to work quickly, saving you money.

When you choose Morehouse, you're not just paying for a calibration service or a load cell. You're investing in peace of mind, knowing your equipment is calibrated accurately and on time.

Q:  Why We Don't List Prices on Our Website for Calibration Services

A:  We don't list calibration service prices on our website because the calibration cost can vary depending on several factors, including what is being calibrated, the standard the device is calibrated to, the number of test points, whether decreasing test points are required, special setups, contractual requirements, and much more. Our goal is to provide you with a meaningful calibration that best replicates use, to do that, we often need to discuss what is needed. Force is mechanical, and small things in setup and calibration can greatly impact the results.

We need to gather more information about your specific calibration needs to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date pricing. This will allow us to ensure you get the best possible value for your money.  Read our article on choosing a calibration provider at https://mhforce.com/choosing-a-calibration-provider/ to help you make the best decision for your needs and avoid common cost mistakes in choosing a calibration provider.

Q:  What is TUR?

A:  It stands for Test Uncertainty Ratio. The simple answer is TUR is a ratio of the tolerance span divided by 2 times the Expanded Calibration Process Uncertainty.

Morehouse offers a simple-to-use Measurement Risk and TUR Calculator Tool for Bench-Level measurements at https://mhforce.com/support-item/measurement-risk-tur-calculator/

We have papers and other documents on TUR and how it relates to Global and Bench-Level Measurements. TUR that many use to help control risk. The higher the TUR, the more room you have to make a conformity “Pass” assessment. Morehouse has very accurate reference standards with low measurement uncertainty, increasing the percentage that we can “Pass” your device, which a different calibration provider may not be able to do. The high TUR ratio helps reduce risk, instill confidence, and avoid headaches such as mass recalls of all the equipment that the device was used to calibrate from a “Fail” conformity assessment.

Q:  What is CMC?

A:  CMC stands for Calibration and Measurement Capability. Are you having problems figuring out the requirements to calculate a CMC uncertainty parameter for force or torque uncertainty? Morehouse has a template to calculate CMCs, explaining everything required to pass an ISO/IEC 17025 audit at https://mhforce.com/support-item/cmc-calculation-for-force-uncertainty/.

Q:  What value should I use for Load Cell Reliability when a system is new?

A:  That depends on several factors. One of the critical factors is figuring out how stable someone needs the load cell system to be to meet their measurement uncertainty requirements.  Read our paper on the topic here:  https://mhforce.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Morehouse-Load-Cell-Reliability-1.pdf

Q:  What if I do not use the proper adapter when calibrating my load cell?

A:  Not using the proper adapters to calibrate load cells, truck & aircraft scales, tension links, dynamometers, and other force-measuring devices can produce significant measurement errors and pose serious safety concerns.  Sometimes, these errors can be 50-plus times what is reported.

Labs that do not use the proper adapters may give you meaningless results. We have an article here: https://mhforce.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Recommended-Compression-and-Tension-Adapters-for-Force-Calibration.pdf examining safety concerns with using older adapters and discusses some of the error sources associated with using the wrong adapters.

Q:  Can I use mass weights to calibrate a load cell?

A:  Using mass weights not adjusted for Force can result in a large measurement error. The two major measurement parameters typically affected are Force and Torque. Any measurement involving Force should use Force. There are acceptable formulas for correcting mass weights to force, which will enable companies who use Mass for these applications to apply known forces.

We created a guidance document to help reduce measurement errors associated with using mass weights for applications using Force.  Read it here: https://mhforce.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/morehouse-mass-to-force-1.pdf

Q:  What can happen if I use an accuracy specification and assume all the measurements are centered to the specification limits?

A: Not correcting for Measurement Bias is a typical problem in the metrology community, where many papers assume a centered process or Measurement and that any known Measurement Bias has been corrected.  Read our technical paper on Measurement Bias, which examines what happens if you fail to correct Measurement Bias at the bench level and gives examples based on Specific Risk.  It is online at https://mhforce.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Lets-talk-about-Bias.pdf
