Morehouse Instrument Company force calibration facilities and procedures are documented in a controlled quality assurance program manual, with compliance to the requirements of the following:


·      ISO/IEC 17025 – General requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories. A2LA accredited, certificate #1398.01.

·      ANSI/NCSL Z540.1 - Laboratories, Calibration, and Measuring and Test Equipment.

·      NSI/NCSL Z540.3 - Requirements for the Calibration of Measuring and Test Equipment.

·      ISO 10012-1 Quality Assurance requirements for measuring equipment – Part 1: Metrological confirmation system for measuring equipment.

·      10 CFR 50 APPENDIX B – Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Fuel Reprocessing Plants.

·      10 CFR PART 21 – United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission – Reporting of Defects and Noncompliance.

·        MIL-STD-45662A – Military Standard Calibration System Requirements- This standard was cancelled January 20, 1995 by the U.S. government but because we have customers using this Standard we provide for its requirements.

·        Other industrial and government specifications and customer specified requirements. 

Morehouse facilities and procedures are subject to, and are under continuous audit by, these government agencies and industrial organizations. Compliance with these bodies assures standardized methods, and can reduce human error in measurement. Standards have existed for many years, and are continually evolving to standardize national and international operations for measurement and calibration services.

Morehouse primary force laboratory is capable of performing ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration from 0.1 lbf to 2.25 million lbf.  Our force lab features:


·       Calibration with primary deadweight standards from 0.1 lbf to 120,000 lbf with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.002 % of applied force in compression and tension

·       Calibration with secondary standards from 100,000 lbf to 2.25 million lbf (4.4 Kn to 10 MN) with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.01 % of applied force in compression

·       Calibration with secondary standards from 100,000 lbf to 1.125 million lbf (4.4 Kn to 5 MN) with Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC) better than 0.01 % of applied force in tension

·       Accredited for calibration in accordance with ASTM E74 for Class AA, ISO 376 for Class 00, and for reporting hysteresis errors on general calibrations

·       Morehouse features one of the highest deadweight calibration capabilities in the world. The only organizations with higher deadweight force measurement capability than Morehouse are National Metrology Institutes such as N.I.S.T.

The force and torque calibration laboratories at Morehouse are accredited for calibration to ISO/IEC 17025 and ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 by A2LA (Certificate Number: 1398.01). This accreditation demonstrates technical competence in force and torque calibration and the operation of a laboratory quality management system. The force calibration laboratory and procedures are compliant with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B: United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants, 10 CFR Part 21: United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Reporting of Defects and Noncompliance.


Morehouse Instrument Company is the only commercial laboratory offering force calibration through 120,000 lbf using deadweights certified by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), by direct comparison to national standards of mass. Weights have been corrected for gravity, material density and air density. Accounting for these variables Morehouse Instrument Company is able to offer force calibrations with an uncertainty of better than 0.002 % of applied force, through 120,000 lbf. ASTM E74 requires instruments used as secondary calibration standards to be calibrated by comparison with deadweights. Additionally, ASTM E74 requires the loading range not include forces less than the first non-zero point applied during calibration.


Morehouse Instrument Company follows the procedure and guidelines of ASTM E74 by applying 11 increasing forces with the first point being well below 10 % of capacity to ensure our customers ASTM Class A lower limits comply with ASTM E74. The first test point is the greater of 400 times the resolution for Class A, 2000 times the resolution for Class AA, or 2 % of the maximum applied force.


Morehouse provides force points below 10 %, so our customers can be in compliant with the following ASTM E74 sections:

·       Section 7.2.1: “If the lower limit of the loading range of the device (see 8.6.1) is anticipated to be less than one-tenth of the maximum force applied during calibration, then forces should be applied at or below this lower limit.”

·       Section 7.2.1 of ASTM E74-13a: “In no case should the smallest force applied be below the lower limit of the instrument as defined by the values: 400 x resolution for Class A loading range and 2000 x resolution for Class AA loading range.”

·       Section 8.6 of ASTM E74-13a: “The loading range shall not include forces outside the range of forces applied during the calibration.” Section 8 note 11 of ASTM E74-13a: “It is recommended that the lower force limit be not less than 2 % (1/50) of the capacity of the instrument.”
